"From the Heart" tells the story of cardiac surgeon, chairman and founder of the Narayana Health system, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty and the expansion of the Indian Narayana model to the Western hemisphere.
This was our first documentary project with client Health Catalyst and we shot three weeks in the Cayman islands and Bangalore, India. We had little to no free time in India, many of my shots were taken out of the window of a taxi with my trusted Fuji x100s. On the very last day, we hit the market, a few temples and wandered around Majesty Road.
Since it was the 'day of friendship,' many kids would walk up to us and ask to shake our hands. We ended up witnessing a ritual of sorts where a goat was cut open and women dancing to pounding drums sprinkled blood on each other in a trance-like state. One of the women drank a full cup of the blood. The few snapshots I was able to steal were right before the crowd turned and started noticing us...to the point where we felt it was best to move on.
